Welcome! I'm Dr. Sajin Kumar K.S., Assistant Professor in Geology, hailing from the picturesque Southern tip of Kerala.
"Born in the serene hamlet at the Southern tip of Kerala, my journey into the world of geology began during my schooling days in Parassala. The picturesque surroundings planted the seeds of curiosity about the Earth, eventually leading me to choose Geology as my major. In 1998, I proudly secured the top rank and earned my MSc Geology degree from the University College, Trivandrum, affiliated with the University of Kerala.
Post my Masters, I delved into the professional arena, gaining experience in geological fieldwork, postgraduate teaching, and various roles at organizations like the Centre for Earth Science Studies and the Department of Mining & Geology. In 2002, my pursuit of knowledge led me to IIT Bombay, India, where I successfully completed my Ph.D. in 2005, focusing on 'Geoinformatics in landslide risk assessment and management in parts of Western Ghats, Central Kerala, India.'
Subsequently, I joined the Geological Survey of India, contributing to engineering geology projects and conducting landslide studies in the challenging terrains of the Himalayas and Western Ghats. In October 2012, I fulfilled my long-standing ambition by joining the Department of Geology at the University of Kerala, India, as an Assistant Professor.

Sachana A. S. , Research Scholar of the Department of Geology, University of Kerala, for obtaining the Meteoritical Society's Research Grant of $3,400. This is the second consecutive time the Research Scholar of this department has obtained this award. Last time Miss Sadeeda Marjan was bestowed with the coveted grant. Miss Sachana obtained this grant for her project proposal 'Luna Impact Crater: Cosmic Fingerprint on Harappan Civilization'.
Subhami Mohan, who worked as a Project Assistant, will be heading to the The University of Mississippi - Ole Miss , USA to pursue her Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Dr. Thomas Oomen in the field of Hydrology and Computational Hydro science. Her research focuses on advanced computational modeling and analysis of hydrological processes, aiming to improve our understanding of water dynamics in various ecosystems. This research is crucial for developing sustainable water management practices and mitigating the impacts of climate change on water resources.
Krishna Priya V. K. , delivered an oral presentation entitled 'Integrated UAV and Field Data Analysis for High-Resolution DEM Enhancement, Rectification, and Debris Flow Modeling' at the prestigious European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2024 held in Vienna, Austria. This presentation exemplified cutting-edge methodologies in geoscience research and analysis, focusing on the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and field data to scrutinize the Pettimudi landslide of August 6, 2020. Krishna Priya's contribution underscores a significant advancement in the understanding and application of advanced techniques within the realm of geosciences, highlighting her profound dedication to pioneering research in the field."
Hiral P.B. (M.Sc. 2021-23) received the First Prize in PG dissertation in the 'Science Odyssey 2024', organized jointly by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) and Department of Botany, UoK.
Congratulations Hiral.
Sadeeda Marjan, Ph.D. student of the Department of Geology, University of Kerala, is bestowed with the famous Meteoritical Society (https://meteoritical.org/) Research Grant for the year 2024. She does her research under Prof. R.B. Binoj Kumar and myself. She was bestowed with this award for her proposal on 'Meteorite Impact Crater Breaching'. Proud of you Sadeeda Marjan and all the best for your future endeavours.
Shania James, one of my Ph.D. students, is the recipient of this year’s Japan Government JSPS Post-Doctoral Fellowship. She will be doing her research at the University of Tokyo. Earlier, in 2022, she was bestowed with the coveted Barringer Award for meteorite impact crater studies. Her Ph.D. is in the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in the Indian Subcontinent.
Aswathi Janardhanan, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Geology, University of Kerala, is the recipient of the 2023 'Barringer Family Award for Meteorite Impact Research'. This is the second consecutive year that our team is fetching this coveted award. Last year it was Shania James. Congratulations Aswathi. Aswathi is jointly supervised by Prof. R.B. Binoj Kumar and myself.
Devika Padmakumar (M.Sc. 2019-21 batch) will be heading to Michigan State University, USA for pursuing her Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Susannah Dorfman in the field of high-pressure geosciences, where she focuses on experimental research on planetary interiors. The research relates to large-scale mantle dynamics, including subduction and plumes, as well as the evolution of Earth’s composition over time.
